Why ship a car by rail — or by train?

Rail car transport — car shipping by train — is the standard method automakers use to move new inventory across North America. The same infrastructure is what carries your vehicle when you ship car by train Canada. Truck carriers are a fine option for short city-to-city moves; for long-haul Canadian routes, train car shipping is typically the better call on safety, wear, and environmental footprint.

Off the highway entirely

Between terminals your car never touches pavement. No gravel spray from passing trucks, no rock chips on the hood, no road salt in the winter, no stone strikes on the windshield. It rides on an enclosed or auto-rack rail car on a dedicated right-of-way.

About 75% lower emissions

Moving a vehicle by rail uses a fraction of the diesel a long-haul truck burns per kilometre. On a Toronto–Vancouver move, the emissions difference vs. over-the-road trucking is dramatic. If you're measuring the footprint of a relocation, rail is the quieter choice.

Virtually no odometer impact

Once your car is on the rail deck, the wheels don't turn. At our terminals it's only driven a few hundred metres during load and unload. You'll see almost no change between drop-off and pickup — a meaningful difference for lease returns, low-kilometre resales, and collectors.

Fixed rail schedules

Trains run on published schedules, not on a driver's hours-of-service clock, weather detours, or fuel-station routing. You get a transit window up front and a steady, predictable arrival at the destination terminal.

Car shipping by train vs truck, compared honestly

Truck carriers pick up and drop off at a door, which is genuinely convenient for short regional routes. The trade-off on long-haul Canadian moves is that the vehicle logs the full distance on its own tires, sits exposed to gravel, stone strikes, and weather for the entire trip, and depends on a single driver's schedule.

Rail removes those variables. Between the origin and destination terminals the car is carried — not driven. There's no highway debris, no winter salt bath, and no unplanned detour through a construction zone. Scheduling is driven by a rail timetable rather than hours-of-service limits, which makes transit windows more predictable on routes over about 1,500 km.

For door-to-door convenience on a rail move, we also offer optional pickup and delivery to and from our terminals — you get the safety profile of rail with the convenience of a truck. For most customers, however, terminal-to-terminal is the simplest and best-priced option.

What we move by rail

We accept standard passenger vehicles: sedans, hatchbacks, crossovers, SUVs, pickup trucks, and minivans. Vehicles must be in running condition with working brakes and steering, and must be under 25 years old — we do not accept older vehicles on rail. High-value and collector vehicles that meet that age limit are welcome and can be booked with upgraded coverage.

Electric vehicles ship on rail the same way gasoline cars do. We ask that EVs arrive with approximately 85% state-of-charge so there is enough buffer for terminal handling and the short drive off the rail car on arrival. No additional paperwork is required for domestic Canadian EV moves.

Every shipment includes carrier liability insurance — it's built into the quoted price, not an optional add-on. Tax is shown as a separate line on the receipt, but there are no fuel surcharges, broker fees, or last-minute extras. One price, booked online, locked the moment you confirm.

How rail car shipping by train works

01

Drop off at origin terminal

Book online, get your drop-off address and window, and bring your vehicle to one of our 8 terminals. Intake takes about 20 minutes — a condition report, keys, and you're done.

02

Rail transit on the national network

Your vehicle is loaded onto an auto-rack and moves along Canada's national rail network on a fixed schedule. You'll get tracking updates at key stages.

03

Pick up at destination terminal

When your car arrives at the destination terminal you get a pickup notification. Bring photo ID, a quick outgoing inspection, and drive away — usually within 15 minutes of arrival on site.
