The Case for Rail

Why Ship by Rail?

Rail isn't just a different mode of transport. For long-distance vehicle moves across Canada, it's a fundamentally smarter choice.

Off the Highway Entirely

Your car never touches a public road during transit. It travels on Canada's national rail corridor — no intersections, no road hazards, no merging traffic.

Zero Rock Chips

No road debris, no stone chips, no weather damage. Rail protects your vehicle in ways that open-deck truck transport physically cannot.

Enclosed & Secured

Your vehicle rides in an enclosed auto rack rail car. No random people nearby. No unauthorized access. No driver opening your doors at a rest stop.

Nobody Drives Your Car

Not a single kilometre on the highway. The only movement is a short drive at the terminal yards — onto the rail car, and off at destination. That is it.

75% Less Carbon

Rail produces up to 75% fewer emissions per kilometre than truck transport. The most sustainable way to move a vehicle long-distance in Canada.

Insurance Included

Every shipment is covered from the moment your vehicle arrives at the terminal. No add-ons, no extra policy. It is part of every single quote.

Predictable Schedule

Rail runs on fixed timetables. Once your car is on the train, the transit window is reliable and trackable — not subject to traffic or driver delays.

Tracked at Every Stage

Real-time status in your client portal. Email and SMS updates when it is loaded, in transit, arrived, and ready for pickup. You always know where your car is.

Rail vs Open Truck — Side by Side

For long-haul inter-provincial moves, this is what the comparison actually looks like.

Rail is not always faster door-to-door — total timeline is 3–4 weeks for coast-to-coast. But for what it protects and what it saves, nothing compares on long hauls. If speed is your priority and you choose a truck carrier, make sure you use a reputable, licensed company — not a random broker off a marketplace. One thing to watch for: some carriers will let you load personal belongings into your vehicle. That might sound convenient, but reputable carriers — including us — do not allow it. Personal items are not insured during transport, they can shift and cause interior damage to your vehicle, and in some cases they can affect the safety of other vehicles being shipped alongside yours. If a carrier is willing to let you pack your car full of stuff, that is a red flag, not a feature.

Car Shipping Across Canada by Train

Rail Auto Canada is a coast-to-coast auto transport service built specifically for Canadians who need to ship a car by train between provinces. We operate terminal-to-terminal car shipping along Canada's national CN rail network, connecting eight major cities — Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax — in one unified service. Instead of driving thousands of kilometres or booking an open truck carrier, you arrange for your car to get to the nearest terminal and collect it at the destination with virtually no highway exposure and virtually no odometer impact — only a few hundred metres at the terminal yards.

Our customers include snowbirds making seasonal provincial moves, families relocating for work or retirement, online car buyers taking delivery from another province, new Canadians settling into a new city, military members on posting, and anyone who doesn't want to put their car on a highway for 5,000 kilometres. Whether you're shipping a sedan from Toronto to Vancouver, an SUV from Calgary to Montreal, or a family vehicle from Halifax to Edmonton, car shipping by train keeps your vehicle off the highway and in a controlled, tracked, insured environment.

Rail auto transport is often the cheapest way to ship a car across Canada on long-haul routes. Car shipping by train is price-competitive with open truck carriers on corridors over 1,000 km, and frequently cheaper on full coast-to-coast moves — without the rock chips, road salt, and weather exposure of highway transport. Pricing is all-in: insurance is included, taxes are shown separately, and there are no surprise fuel surcharges added after the quote.

Booking is simpler than most people expect. You use our online quote wizard to get an instant car shipping cost for your specific route, book and pay online, drop your vehicle at the origin terminal, and track its progress through your client portal as it travels by train across the country. The total timeline from handoff to ready-for-pickup is typically 3 to 4 weeks for coast-to-coast routes, and shorter for closer corridors. When you're ready, get a car shipping quote and compare — most people are surprised at how affordable vehicle shipping by rail is.

Common Questions

How much does it cost to ship my car?
Pricing depends on your route, vehicle type, and current fuel surcharge rates. The fastest way to get your exact price is our instant quote wizard — takes about 60 seconds, no phone call needed. Your quote includes insurance and shows tax separately. No hidden fees, no surprises. What you see is what you pay.
Can I leave personal belongings in my car?
No. Your vehicle must be completely empty — no clothes, no electronics, no luggage, no kitchenware, nothing. Personal items are not insured, can shift during transit, and may result in your vehicle being refused at the terminal. The only things that can stay in the car are items that belong to the vehicle itself: spare tire, jack, and jumper cables (these are not insured either). We send a full vehicle prep checklist after you book so nothing gets missed.
How long does shipping take?
The total time from drop-off to ready-for-pickup includes four phases: (1) you drop off your vehicle at the terminal, (2) the car waits for the next scheduled rail departure — this can take up to 10 days, (3) your vehicle travels by rail, and (4) your car is unloaded and processed at the destination terminal — 2 to 3 days. For most routes, you should plan for 2 to 4 weeks total from drop-off to ready-for-pickup. Coast-to-coast routes like Toronto to Vancouver are typically 3 to 4 weeks. We always give you a realistic range upfront so there are no surprises.
How do I track my vehicle?
Every client gets a personal tracking portal at shipmycar.railautocanada.ca where you can check your vehicle's status 24/7. You also receive automated email and SMS notifications at every milestone — when your car is received at the terminal, when it's loaded onto the train, when it's in transit, when it arrives, and when it's ready for pickup. You never have to chase us for an update.
Is my car safe on the train?
Rail is one of the safest ways to transport a vehicle. Your car is secured on a rail car — nobody drives it. It never touches a highway, so there's no exposure to road debris, rock chips, or weather damage that you'd get with an open truck carrier. We photograph your vehicle at check-in to document its condition. Insurance is included on every shipment at no extra cost. The damage rate on rail transport is extremely low.
What do I need to bring to drop-off?
Bring these four things to your terminal drop-off:
  • Your vehicle with at least a quarter tank of fuel (gas/diesel/hybrid only — no upper limit, fill it up if you want)
  • One set of keys — keep any spares with you
  • Valid government-issued photo ID
  • Your job number from your booking confirmation

If you're shipping an EV, the battery should be charged to approximately 85% — not full, not near empty. And before you arrive: clear all personal items from the vehicle, and remove any external accessories like roof racks or bike racks.
