From quote to pickup in 6 steps. Here's exactly what happens when you ship your car across Canada by train with Rail Auto Canada — a full walkthrough of our rail auto transport process.
Get Your Quote Online
Visit shipmycar.railautocanada.ca and use our instant quote wizard. Enter your origin city, destination, vehicle type, and pickup/delivery method. You get an automated all-in quote immediately — tax included, insurance included, no phone calls required.
Book, Sign & Pay
Review your quote in your personal client portal. Read the terms, sign electronically, and pay to confirm the booking. You'll receive a confirmation email and SMS with your job number and assigned drop-off date. The terminal address is sent once booking is confirmed and paid.
Drop Off at the Terminal
Drive to your assigned origin terminal during your booked window. Our team will do a condition inspection, document the vehicle, and complete intake paperwork. Drop-off takes 15–30 minutes. If you selected home pickup, we arrange a local carrier to collect from your address.
Your Car Waits for the Train
Your vehicle is secured in the terminal yard awaiting the next scheduled train departure. Trains depart on a fixed schedule — typically every 7 to 10 days on main corridors, loading when there is a sufficient number of vehicles. This is why we always recommend booking your car shipping by train in advance.
Rail Transit by Train — Tracked End to End
Once loaded onto the train, your car travels by train on Canada's CN rail network, secured to an auto rack rail car. You receive notifications when the train departs and when it arrives at the destination terminal. Live status is available in your client portal at any time — so you always know where your vehicle is.
Pick Up at Destination
After your vehicle arrives by train at the destination terminal, our team unloads and processes vehicles — typically 2 to 3 days. Once ready, you receive a pickup notification with your window and terminal details. Bring photo ID and your job number. A quick condition check and you drive away.
Why train-based auto transport is different
Train-based car shipping isn't just a different mode of transport than truck — it's a fundamentally different process. With an open truck carrier your vehicle is loaded onto a highway trailer and driven the entire distance on public roads, one load at a time, subject to a single driver's hours-of-service schedule, weather, traffic, and fuel stops. With rail auto transport, your car is loaded onto a train at a secured terminal, travels on a dedicated rail corridor alongside dozens of other vehicles, and is unloaded at a secured terminal on the other end. There's no highway exposure, virtually no odometer impact, and a predictable schedule governed by a rail timetable.
Wondering how much it costs to ship a car by train? Our pricing is all-in: insurance, terminal handling, and real-time tracking are included in every quote, and there are no hidden fuel surcharges added after booking. See full route-by-route car shipping cost ranges on our pricing page.

The Full Process, Step by Step
Here is exactly what happens at every stage — from the moment you arrive at the origin terminal to the moment you drive away at the destination.
At the Origin Terminal — Drop-Off
When you arrive at the origin terminal during your booked window, you are met by a Rail Auto Canada intake agent. The terminal is a secured, fenced rail yard — not a public parking lot. The exact address is only sent to you after booking is confirmed and paid.
Together with the agent, you walk around the full exterior of the vehicle and document its condition on the intake form — every existing scuff, dent, chip, or scratch is noted and photographed. This condition report is the official baseline for your shipment and is critical if a damage claim were ever needed.
You hand over one set of keys, sign the intake paperwork, and receive a copy for your records. The entire drop-off process takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Once complete, your vehicle enters the secure terminal yard and is assigned to the next scheduled train departure.
In the Terminal Yard — Awaiting Departure
Your vehicle is held securely in the terminal yard until the next scheduled train is ready to load. On major corridors like Toronto to Vancouver, trains are loaded and depart every 7 to 10 days. On some shorter or less frequent routes, the schedule may vary — your booking confirmation will include the expected departure window.
Your car does not move during this time. It sits in the secured yard, untouched, until loading day. You will receive an automated notification the moment your vehicle is loaded onto the rail car and the train departs.
Rail Transit — Your Car on the Train
Your vehicle travels secured on an auto rack rail car on Canada's CN rail network — the same infrastructure that crosses the country coast to coast every day. Nobody drives your car. It never touches a highway. It is loaded once and unloaded once at the destination.
Rail transit times range from 3 to 5 days for shorter corridors (Vancouver to Calgary) up to 12 to 14 days for full cross-country routes (Vancouver to Montreal). You can track your shipment's live status in your client portal at shipmycar.railautocanada.ca at any time, and automated updates are sent at each milestone.
Once the train arrives at the destination terminal, you will receive a notification confirming arrival and letting you know that processing has begun.
At the Destination Terminal — Pickup Day
After the train arrives, the destination terminal team unloads and processes all vehicles. This typically takes 2 to 3 days. Once your vehicle is ready for collection, you receive a pickup-ready notification by email and SMS. This notification includes your assigned pickup window, the terminal address, and access instructions.
Bring your government-issued photo ID and your job number. A terminal agent will meet you, walk around the vehicle with you to confirm its condition against the original intake report, and hand over your keys. You sign the release paperwork and the shipment is complete.
If you notice any damage that was not present at drop-off, you must note it on the release form before leaving the terminal. This is the window for submitting an insurance claim — it cannot be done after you have driven away. Claims must be submitted within 5 business days of delivery with your pre-shipment photos as evidence.
Your vehicle's odometer will show only a few hundred metres of movement — the short distance driven on and off the rail car at each terminal yard. No highway miles. No road wear.
If You Booked Door-to-Door or Home Pickup / Delivery
If you selected home pickup at origin, a local carrier partner will come to your address and transport the vehicle directly to the origin terminal. You do not need to drive to the terminal yourself. The carrier will confirm your address and arrange a pickup window — typically with 24 hours advance notice.
If you selected home delivery at destination, a local carrier partner will collect your vehicle from the destination terminal and deliver it to your address once the shipment is processed and ready. You receive notification of the delivery window and the carrier will confirm the day before.
Full door-to-door combines both — home pickup at origin and home delivery at destination. The entire shipment is handled from your driveway to your driveway. Home service is available in most major cities and suburbs near our 8 terminal locations. Your exact quote will confirm availability and pricing for your specific address. If you'd prefer the lower-cost option, see our terminal-to-terminal car shipping service for details.
